FCI McKean Federal Release Paths
FCI McKean is a federal correctional institution near Lewis Run and Bradford. Its adjacent satellite prison camp is part of the same BOP complex, not a second county facility. When a person leaves FCI McKean, the next location may be another federal prison, an in-transit status, a residential reentry setting managed through community corrections, or release from BOP custody. These events do not carry the same legal meaning.
A transfer changes the physical institution while federal custody continues. “IN TRANSIT” also means movement, not release. A Community Corrections Management location can reflect a halfway-house or reentry arrangement that remains within BOP custody. By contrast, BOP states that a past Release Date with no listed facility indicates release from BOP custody on that date. A Location of “RELEASED” communicates the same boundary. Even then, the result does not establish that federal supervised release ended or that no state, local, or immigration authority took custody.

Confirm an FCI McKean Release
The BOP Inmate Locator is the correct public search for FCI McKean. Its federal records run from 1982 forward and update daily. Search by a register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number when available. A number is more precise than a name. The name route accepts first, middle, and last name with optional race, age, and sex. Compare every returned identifier before interpreting the result.

- Match the correct person by name, register number, age, race, and sex as displayed.
- Read Release Date and Location together. A past date alone needs the matching released or no-facility context.

- Check the federal court docket or another agency when supervision, a detainer, or post-BOP custody may continue.
BOP's official explanation of federal inmate records supplies the key interpretation. If the Release Date is past and no facility is shown, the person was released from BOP custody on that date. “Not in BOP Custody” also speaks only to BOP's boundary. For incarceration before 1982, BOP directs researchers to the National Archives rather than promising coverage in the current locator.
Important: Leaving FCI McKean is not enough. Confirm that the BOP result shows release from federal custody, not a transfer or reentry placement.

Request FCI McKean Release Records
The public locator is usually enough to establish the date BOP custody ended. A detailed release record may require a BOP Freedom of Information Act request. Identify the person with the register number, the relevant institution, and a narrow date range. Ask for the existing release or discharge documentation rather than asking BOP to create a narrative. When another person's protected information is sought, BOP may require identity certification or authorization, including the DOJ-361 process described in federal records guidance.
Separate the date displayed to the public from the more complete institutional file. The locator is a current search tool with historic federal coverage, but it does not promise every movement document, release plan, court order, detainer, or supervision term. A focused request should state which existing record is sought and why the displayed result is not enough to identify the custody event. Include the federal register number whenever possible. That avoids a same-name mismatch and helps BOP locate the correct FCI McKean record without turning the request into a demand for a new report.
Federal court records supply a different part of the trail. A judgment and commitment order can explain the sentence. A later release or detention order may clarify legal authority. Yet an order does not always prove the time of physical departure, just as an FCI transfer does not prove release. For a federal pretrial defendant who was never committed to BOP, the federal docket and U.S. Marshals route may be more useful because the Marshals control many federal prisoners from court-ordered detention through release, acquittal, or delivery to BOP.

FCI McKean Versus County Release
McKean County Jail and FCI McKean are separate institutions in separate legal systems. The county jail's records come from McKean County, PA SAVIN, the Pennsylvania court portal, Adult Probation, and any receiving custodian. FCI McKean records come from BOP and federal sources. Pennsylvania DOC does not become the correct source merely because the federal prison sits in Pennsylvania.
The institution includes a federal correctional facility and an adjacent satellite prison camp. The camp does not create a separate county release archive. Movement between parts of the complex, or onward to a different BOP site, remains a federal placement question. Search the same BOP locator and read the current Location. A blank facility paired with a future date does not show that release has already occurred. The date must be past, and the location context must support release from BOP custody.
This distinction prevents two common errors. First, a person can leave the physical federal complex but remain in BOP custody at another institution, in transit, or in community corrections. Second, a person released from McKean County Jail will not appear in BOP merely because the county and federal facility share the word McKean. Use the McKean County Jail release record only for the county institution. The federal locator remains the controlling public route for FCI McKean.
After an FCI McKean Release
A completed BOP release does not rule out a transfer or hold imposed by another authority. State or county custody must be checked in that jurisdiction's system. If immigration custody may follow, the ICE Online Detainee Locator System searches by A-number and country of birth or by exact biographical data. ICE's search has exclusions, lag, and a limited period for some released records, so a negative result cannot settle the question.
Federal supervised release is also distinct from confinement. A BOP “RELEASED” location can be fully consistent with ongoing supervision under a federal court sentence. Use the sentencing docket and the correct federal supervision contact to clarify that status. A person under a writ may leave FCI McKean for court while remaining a federal prisoner. Every claim should name the custody boundary actually proven: left FCI McKean, left BOP custody, entered another agency's custody, or began supervision.
